Polyurethane Urban Legends with Isotope

🔍İzotüp and Urban Legends: Common Misconceptions

There's a lot of misinformation circulating in the market about spray polyurethane and injection kits. As İzotüp, we're here to clarify the facts so you can achieve the most efficient insulation.

1. Myth: "Polyurethane foam loses volume and collapses over time."

Fact: While this can be seen in low-quality foams, İzotüp Closed Cell products stabilize their form seconds after application. They retain their expanded volume throughout the life of the structure, never collapsing or sagging.

2. Myth: "Open-cell foam is better than closed-cell foam because it expands more."

Fact: More expansion does not mean better insulation.

  • Open Cell (R-3.7): Good for sound insulation, but permeable to air and moisture.
  • Closed Cell (R-6.2): This is where İzotüp's real strength lies. It provides both thermal insulation and acts as a water/moisture barrier. Density is more important than expansion rate.

3. Myth: "When filling a void, you need to fill the hole to the brim."

Fact: This is the biggest application mistake! Polyurethane expands many times its original volume after injection. If you press too much, it can put pressure on the surface and cause cracks. The correct method, as outlined in our İzotüp Injection guide, is to proceed sequentially and controllably.

4. Myth: "It's enough to clean the gun with thinner when the job is done."

Fact: No! Polyurethane cannot be cleaned with thinner once it has cured. Our biggest secret is petroleum jelly and the 30-second rule. If you don't apply petroleum jelly to the gun tip and wait longer than 30 seconds, that gun may become unusable. Prevention (petroleum jelly), not cleaning, saves the day.

5. Myth: "Polyurethane is always waterproof."

Fact: Only Closed Cell polyurethanes have waterproofing properties. If you use an open-cell product in a wet area (like a boat bilge), it will absorb water like a sponge. For boats and damp areas, İzotüp 200-K or 600-K should definitely be preferred.

6. Myth: "You need very expensive machinery to apply it."

Fact: That used to be the case! İzotüp kits are designed to eliminate the need for expensive machinery and electrical investment. These kits, which come with their own gun and hose, offer the same performance as a professional machine in a portable box.

💡 "Expert Advice" for the End of the Page

"Remember, good insulation is achieved not just with the product, but with correct information. Don't start work without doing a test spray and ensuring the nozzle is fully locked!"
